Notes in Motion Outreach Dance Theatre offers in-school programs that teach dance technique, choreography, improvisation, yoga, and arts appreciation to students in the NYC Public Schools. United by our singular approach to arts education, The Movement Exchange Method, students take on leadership roles in their own learning, have creative input in the design of the curriculum, participate in critical discussions of the work of their peers, and develop collaborative skills. Programs foster self-discovery, risk-taking, and making connections between different topics, themes, and areas of learning. We aim to provide access to the art form of dance to inspire the next generation of dance appreciators. Since 2000, Notes in Motion has brought arts programs to over 30,000 students.
Arts Education Programming:
Notes in Motion Programs target age-appropriate learning objectives, and follow a five-part structure: 1. Warm-up – Students learn technical skills through progressive exercises. 2. Exploration/Improvisation – Students physically explore class theme through guided activities. 3. Choreography – Students develop original movement phrases, create group dances, or learn set chore- ography. 4. Performance Prep – Students prepare for culminating performance event. 5. Reflection – Students process their learning through observation, analysis, & constructive criticism. We work collaboratively with classroom teachers at every stage. Our Teaching Artists guide students through a unique creative process, creating connections with other academic subjects and foster active learning.
